4. Initial Aids to Use in a Crisis

This module introduces essential early-stage tools designed to support a rapid, coordinated, and effective response to crises. These initial aids are designed to reduce delays, enhance communication, and help teams recognise and escalate incidents before they escalate into full crises.

We begin with an overview of foundational tools such as the Emergency-At-A-Glance (EAAG) status report, which provides structured, timestamped updates to enhance situational awareness and support decision-making. The Incident Escalation Guide is then explored, offering pre-agreed criteria and procedures for identifying and escalating critical incidents. This reduces hesitation among responders and ensures swift activation of the Crisis Management Team (CMT).

The Escalation Flowchart builds on this by visually mapping the entire escalation process, clearly outlining roles, responsibilities, and actions from initial response to full team activation. Lastly, we introduce the First Hour Checklist, a practical guide for the CMT Leader to structure the team’s first meeting, assign roles, and begin coordinated crisis response planning. Together, these tools form the critical foundation of a timely and effective organisational crisis response.
