Steve Power

About the Author & Course Foundation

I have developed my expertise over four decades working across Australia, the UK, the US, and the Asia-Pacific region, including roles as CEO of my own IT enterprise and Global Programme Director at a leading multinational technology company. I have also been a company director and business owner since the mid-1980s, including as a director and part-owner of an Asia-focused financial investment firm. This has given me direct exposure to global economic shocks and market volatility, including first-hand experience of the Black Monday market crash and the Asian currency crisis, shaping a practical understanding of how external shocks translate into real business consequences.

Since 2004, I have specialised in crisis management and IT disaster recovery. In that time, I have worked alongside media advisors, legal professionals, communications specialists, and operational leaders, managing high-impact events, gaining direct insight into how crises unfold, how decisions are made under pressure, and how reputational, financial, and operational risks intersect.

My work is further informed through collaboration with my partner, engaged in academic research into established crisis communication theory, ensuring my approach balances real-world application with proven academic principles.

What I bring together is not a single discipline, but the combined practices of those who manage crises at the front line, structured into a practical, usable framework for organisations.

I was admitted to the Australian Institute of Company Directors in the early 1990s and later achieved FAICD accreditation. I am also a registered project manager with the Australian Institute of Project Managers.

How This Expertise Is Built Into the Course

Each module reflects how crises are actually managed in practice, integrating operational response, decision-making under pressure, crisis communications, and reputational management into a single, cohesive approach. The course draws directly on experience working alongside media specialists, legal advisors, communications professionals, and operational leaders, ensuring that the content reflects the realities of managing complex, high-impact events.

This is reinforced by research into established crisis communication theory, providing a balance between proven academic principles and practical application. The result is a methodology that is both structured and adaptable, capable of being applied across different industries, organisational sizes, and crisis scenarios.

Spanning nine comprehensive modules, the course covers crisis management fundamentals, team roles, action planning, tools and frameworks, crisis communications, reputation management, contingency planning, and simulation exercises. Each component is designed not just to inform, but to enable execution.

Drawing on over twenty years of hands-on implementation, including framework development, training delivery, crisis simulations, and real-world incident support, the course provides participants with practical tools such as role cards, action plans, templates, and interactive exercises.

The outcome is a complete, end-to-end system that equips organisations and individuals to prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises with clarity, structure, and confidence.
